Oh to be Great!
This life is a funny state. I am someone stuck in the belly of ideas and creative process, knowing that some of these ideas that I dream up are brilliant, and may inspire many lives and could influence many, and that is generally where I decide to end my creative process. After questioning this reality I realized it is probably fear of failure and rejection trying to skip the journey and just land at the destination called “greatness”. But why do I and so many others fear the journey, and what are we actually striving for?
I think there are millions of absolutely brilliant people in this world who are stuck in the same boat, screwing on tooth paste lids in some dank factory somewhere because they have bought into the idea that this is as good as they get, and its time to stop dreaming. Then there are so many brilliant people on the other end of the spectrum who have created some thing or done something and that alone defines them, and they allow society and culture to chain them into this identity, leaving little room to grow outside of what they have already produced.
See we have this destructive view of greatness, and greatness in actuality has nothing to do with what you can do or how well you can do it, and as soon as it does, the things you do seem more valuable then who you are and your name becomes a line of clothing, or paintings, instead of the being standing in your shoes. With this being our definition of greatness many will never be great and their life giving gems will be stuck deep with in them which no one will ever see, and we will have to to stick with our sick minded media to define to us what greatness is, promoting anorexia as beautiful, and glorifying perverted musicians worshiping their own stupidity. A foolish world creating great fools, and this is what we support and encourage.
Why don’t we take the initiative, and define greatness for ourselve, reassemble greatness to truely what greatness is. That means put down the People magazine and invest in the people who actually live life with us. See greatness in the creativity in our family and friends and selflessly encourage them, even by letting them be an inspiration for your work, let people have an influence on you, we don’t have to try be a hundered percent unique we are already created that way. If we stop trying to see the value in ourselves and rather just accept that we are valued and are worthy, giving us the freedom to look out and see the value in others and point it out.
I honestly think to be great is to be humble, to love others and see the good in them and affirm them honouring them above ourselves; expecting nothing in return. If each of us lived this way the world would truly be a great place. One day when we reach the true meaning of “greatness”, we will know that it amounts only to the love we carry.
